whenWe Content Guidelines
These guidelines are here to help you share your memories in a way that feels true to the spirit of whenWe: thoughtful, genuine and respectful.
The purpose of whenWe is to gather meaningful memories and reflections from the people who have shared moments together. These memories may relate to a person, but they can also capture experiences connected to a place, an event, a period of life, or a shared experience.
Often it is the small moments, the conversations, the laughter, the unexpected situations or the quiet acts of kindness that stay with us long after they have passed. whenWe exists to bring those moments together through the voices of the people who experienced them.
Each whenWe memory book adds another perspective to a memory that might otherwise fade with time. Brought together, these contributions help create a fuller picture of the relationships, experiences and moments that shaped a life.
The guidelines below are intended to help keep every contribution thoughtful, genuine and respectful.
Your memory, your voice
There is no perfect way to write a memory. Some memories are short and simple, while others are more detailed and reflective.
What matters most is that the words are genuine and come from your own perspective. Feel free to write in your own words and style.
At the same time, try to be as descriptive as you can. Small details help bring a memory to life.
Think about what you saw, heard or felt at the time. Consider who else was there, what was happening around you, and what made the moment memorable. These details help the reader imagine being present in that memory with you.
Write with sincerity
Memories are most meaningful when they come from a genuine place. Write honestly about your experiences, memories and reflections, even if the moment was small or simple.
Often the memories that mean the most are the everyday moments that reveal something about the person, the relationship or the experience you shared.
A simple way to begin
If you are unsure where to start, try beginning with a specific moment.
Think about a time you shared with this person, place or experience and ask yourself:
• Where were you?
• Who else was there?
• What was happening at the time?
• What made the moment memorable?
• How did it make you feel?
• What did you see, hear, smell or notice around you?
Sometimes the smallest details bring a memory to life. Describing what you remember seeing, hearing, feeling or even smelling can help the reader imagine being there in that moment with you.
Starting with a single moment often makes it much easier to write a genuine and meaningful memory.
Be thoughtful and respectful
Memories should treat the person, place or event being remembered with care and respect. Many of the people mentioned in memories may also read the book, so please keep this in mind when describing shared experiences.
A thoughtful tone helps ensure the memories remain meaningful and positive for everyone involved.
Protect privacy
Avoid sharing private or sensitive information about others unless you have reason to believe it would be welcomed by the people involved.
Memories shared through whenWe may be read by a wider group of family members, friends and sometimes children, so it is important to keep this in mind when writing about shared experiences.
A respectful approach helps ensure that memories remain something everyone can appreciate.
A shared responsibility
whenWe is built on goodwill and respect. Contributors are encouraged to share memories thoughtfully and in a way that reflects the positive spirit of the platform.
whenWe may review or decline submissions that are clearly inconsistent with the respectful spirit of these guidelines.
Why these guidelines exist
Every memory shared through whenWe becomes part of a larger collection of perspectives about a person, place or shared experience. Individually, each memory is a moment. Together, they create something much more meaningful.
When contributors write with sincerity, care and respect, the result is not just a collection of memories. It becomes a lasting reflection of the relationships, moments and experiences that shaped a life.
Thank you for helping preserve those moments.
